Services for our Clients

Academica Associates provides its clients with the following services:

·        Regular exclusive and personalized briefings (both oral and written) designed to fit the specific needs and requirements of each individual client, since we believe that one of our primary functions is pedagogical---to explain, clarify and illuminate issues and problems with which our clients may not be totally familiar.

·        Access to key public and private sector figures, both internationally and in the United States.

·        Original and confidential research, according to our clients’ needs and interests, on business and political conditions and opportunities in different markets, industries and geographical areas---including risk assessment.

·        Small seminars and/or mini-conferences, conducted by leading experts and incumbent political figures, on a wide range of economic, political and business developments, both around the world and in specific industries.

·        Preparation for testimony before parliamentary or congressional committees, as well as committees of the European commission and parliament. We will assist clients interested in dealings with the EU and the USA, and we will consult with and assist countries that may be in the process of applying for membership. We have in the past negotiated with and explained the EU to firms contemplating investments in EU member states and European countries not yet members that nonetheless receive EU financial aid and money and loans to attract foreign investment and investment aid from the EU.

Past Projects

The multifaceted nature of our past successful assignments might serve to give a more concise and specific picture of the scope and quality of our services, and our ability to achieve positive results in a wide range of areas. Some of our past projects have included---

·        Shortly after the collapse of European Communism, we assisted the Government of  Albania in its metamorphosis from tyranny to democratic pluralism. Working, at the time, directly with the Office of the Albanian President. We designed a strategy for attracting foreign investors. Also, working in conjunction with the State Mobile Phone Company and the largest American manufacturer of mobile phones and related equipment we arranged for the construction of a wireless network that could be used both for mobile phones and to bring phones into the homes of the inhabitants of this mountainous country. More recently we have served as political consultants to the Prime Minister, most recently as his advisers during this past spring's elections which enabled him to form another government.

·        In collaboration with ICEP (Instituto do Comercio Externo de Portugal) and its successor, AICEP (Agência para o Investimento e Comércio Externo de Portugal),  the Portuguese agency for tourism and inward investment, we helped to design an investment strategy for assisting in the already rapid growth of this small but dynamic nation. We are responsible for bringing many new industries to Portugal and for helping several established Portuguese firms to plant their flags in the United States.

·        We assisted a large British construction and engineering firm caught-up in an American technology boycott of the Soviet Union during the waning years of that regime, we arranged for meetings in Washington between the firm’s Chairman and Vice Chairman and key White House and Congressional figures, resulting in the exemption of the company from the boycott. We also worked during this period as a consultant to 3i, the largest investment capital firm in the U.K.

·        Just prior to his retirement, the Chairman of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford II, retained us to write a series of valedictory addresses marking his retirement that could serve as both speeches and publishable essays. The speeches were delivered with great success at the business schools of Stanford University, and the University of Chicago, and subsequently published as a book by the University of Chicago Press.

·        A large British trade union was concerned that its mobile communications and computing systems were out of control. We devised a strategic plan to unify their communications and improve their effectiveness while also reducing their costs---enabling them to offer cheaper and better services to their members.

·        Working with the Transport Workers Union of Albania during a chaotic period in that country, we arranged for meetings between the union president and key functionaries of the American Federation of Labor that resulted in financial aid to the union, which enabled it to survive.

·        We have served as advisers to the Bulgarian President, Zhelyu Mitev Zhelev, during the difficult decade of the 1990s, when the neighboring region was in conflict and the country was trying to speed its evolution towards democratic capitalism. We also worked with the country's Foreign Minister, Ivan Stancioff, helping to keep Bulgaria out of the regional conflict and in keeping the political leadership focused on becoming a competitive capitalist nation, as well as a member of NATO and the European Union. Indeed we worked with the Bulgarians in their successful negotiation to become members of the EU. We are currently performing a similar service for the Albanian Government.

·        We assisted a Canadian internet service provider in establishing itself in the U.K., in finding managerial staff, implementing a local network, and in winning their first British contract.

·        We advised one of the largest multi-national tobacco firms in designing strategies to cope with the anti-smoking movement. We also prepared a major paper for the industry’s trade association, arguing against the nanny state and stressing the libertarian argument for the "right" of adults to choose for themselves whether to smoke or not to smoke.

·        We helped a large British high tech firm to implement an effective channel to market in Africa. We defined local solutions and set up agreements with distributors, bringing the firm together with reliable indigenous groups and organizations.

·        We worked with an international air catering firm and the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport to modernize the airports in Varna and Sofia, and to establish a state-of-the-art restaurant and food service at these airports.

·        We assisted a Swiss private bank to develop new business in the Middle East and South Africa.

·        We worked for the Mongolian Development Agency and the Ministry of Mines to attract international mining companies to that country.

·        We have advised a large Australian mining company on its work in the United States.

·        We assisted an Argentine publisher and broadcaster in developing a cable and satellite television system for southern Argentina.

·        We have consulted with a large American oil company on the political difficulties it encountered while exploring for oil in Namibia, formerly South West Africa.

·        We have worked with the largest Brazilian international contractor on its external activities in the United States and Africa.
