Speech and Article Writing

One of the weakest sectors of most American and international companies are their public affairs divisions, often presided over by undistinguished former journalists who bring to their jobs the same lack of diligence and imagination they evinced in their former profession.

From a public relations standpoint, what many business and national leaders often fail to understand is that there is no compelling reason or necessity for them to reach out, at great expense, to a mass audience. They should instead be reaching out to the leadership of a given country or industry, by which I mean the political leaders, the intellectual elite, the media and the business community. In a country like the United States, a nation of 300 million plus people, they might be reaching out to a thousand such leaders---the people who make things go in the country. A column published in, say, the Washington Times or the Washington Post, coinciding with a visit to the United States and, more specifically, the District of Columbia of a foreign leader, cabinet member or business dignitary, can be a powerful tool in any meetings a given client might have with members of Congress or the Executive Branch of the American government. Unlike the extremely costly paid advertisements mentioned above, columns in those two papers are considered to be must  reading by the American power elite.

Quite often these multi-million dollar campaigns consist of multiple page newspaper and magazine advertisements, consisting of dull, often ill considered, ghost-written articles, and even more tedious pieces on the country's economy and resources. These multi-paged advertisements often appears in major newspapers and magazines throughout the United States and the European Union, and have, in my opinion, virtually zero benefit for the economic development of the nations or industries that were talked into spending a small fortune for their composition and propagation.  A former official of the Indonesian government, shortly after deciding to drop the services of a multi-national PR firm, described these multi-page advertisements to me as being "boring and soporific."

We also assist in the preparation of  testimony before parliamentary or congressional committees, as well as committees of the European Commission and Parliament. We will assist clients' interested in dealings with the EU and the USA, and we will consult with and assist countries that may be in the process of applying for EU membership. We have in the past negotiated with and explained the EU to firms contemplating investments in EU member states and European countries not yet members that nonetheless receive EU financial aid, money and loans to attract foreign investment and investment aid from the EU. Working with the Bulgarian government we played a central role in their admission to the EU, and we are currently assisting the Albanian government in its campaign for admission to the EU.
